Leading West Australian surveying company, Handley Surveys have been named as the primary backer of a new 2016 model Melbourne Performance Centre Audi R8 LMS GT machine for this weekend's Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 Hour GT endurance event.
The distinctively liveried black and electric blue Handley sponsored car will also see Queensland 25-year-old Shae Davies join the pre-existing combination of brothers James and Theo Koundouris, and fellow Queenslander Marcus Marshall, the latter having formerly raced alongside the Koundouris combination at the half-day Bathurst event as well as selected other GT races.
It was Marshall who brokered the naming rights association with Handley Surveys, and the distinctively liveried number 40 machine could be a sneaky chance to challenge for the podium. Fittingly, racing number 40 signifies the of number years since the formation of the Handley business, which was founded in 1976 (see more below).
The MPC run machine will be one of four new Audi R8 LMS cars fielded by the operation, while the team will also tend to a fifth earlier model entry.
Troy Russell - Team Principal, Melbourne Performance Centre
"We are delighted to have Handley Surveys come on board as major backer of the number 40 entry. We would also like to welcome Shae to the team and the Audi Sport customer racing program in Australia and along with the Koundouris brothers and Marcus we have a great combination to be in with a chance of being on the podium come Sunday night. As with all endurance races you need to be there at the end with the highest ranked drivers in the car. The key is to be on the lead lap at the 10 hour mark and from there anything can happen."
"The new Audi R8 LMS has already left its mark in endurance racing all over the world and with the extremely high calibre of the drivers in our team this weekend I am sure we can fast track Shae's learning of the new car, which he won't have even sat in until he arrives at Bathurst on Wednesday."
"Coming off claiming the Class B pole position and race win at last year's Bathurst 12 hour I can honestly say I have never been better prepared or competitively positioned heading to the mountain, and I can't wait to hit the track in the new Audi R8 machine which is a simply awesome piece of kit. We have a great team behind us, together with a solid driving line-up and I truly believe our entry could be a genuine dark horse come late Sunday afternoon."
"To say I am excited would be the understatement of the year and I am so thankful to all concerned for this incredible opportunity. I have been wanting to do the Bathurst 12 hour for a long while and to finally get the chance with the MPC team, and in a current spec Audi R8, is just awesome. There will be a few sleep deprived nights before I get to Bathurst and I can't wait to get stuck into it."
"We're very pleased to be associated with such a well known Western Australian family company such as Handley Surveys and really looking forward to tackling the mountain again with two talented and experienced drivers in Marcus and Shae."
Alex Handley - General Manager, Handley Surveys
"Handley Surveys are pleased to be the naming rights sponsorship of the MPC Audi R8 for this year's Bathurst 12 Hour event."
"The event has great synergy with our company and highlights many of our core values including; speed, repeatability, precision, technology and endurance" said General Manager, Alex Handley.
"2016 marks 40 years of the family owned surveying business for Handley Surveys, hence the decision to partner with the Koundouris family, MPC and by running the #40 on the Audi R8," he said.
